Working with Hemingway Editor is quite straightforward. You have the option to register for a free trial or use the platform without registration, albeit with some limitations. Opting for the free trial provided a fuller experience. Note though, that there is no grading form on the platform, only a field to paste text for analysis. On the bright side, even this allows to upload and export text, which significantly streamlines the work process. Additionally, the desktop app option can make the user experience even more seamless. 

Using Grammarly, we also enjoyed the convenience of the solution. It is accessible as both a browser extension and a desktop app, and setting up a personal account is simple and quick. Similarly to its competitor, this platform allows for easy uploading and downloading of files. However, like Hemingway, Grammarly does not provide a grading form, only a field for analyzing writing quality. This is the only aspect that takes away a few points from its overall convenience. Despite this, Grammarly’s extensive features and ease of integration with various platforms contribute to a highly user-friendly experience.

Thus, in general, both services proved to be greatly convenient and offered a simple work process.

We have mentioned a couple of times already that neither of the services provided sufficient paper grading since they serve more for the purposes of technical improvement of writing. Yet, they still evaluated the two of our essays for us: a well-written and poorly-made one. So let’s take a look at which one was better. 

The first thing that Hemingway Editor does is improve text clarity by suggesting changes for hard-to-read sentences and weak vocabulary. It allows users to specify the type of text, such as technical, to tailor readability assessments. However, during our evaluation, the platform marked many typical academic sentences as ‘hard to read,’ even in a well-written essay. The scoring system was also unclear, as a poorly written essay received a high score and a “good” mark, while a well-crafted paper got a lower score and an “ok” comment. This inconsistency, paired with the lack of content analysis or overall feedback, makes Hemingway more suitable as an online proofreader rather than an essay checker. 

Similarly, Grammarly also focuses on grammar and mechanics rather than comprehensive essay grading. It identifies spelling and grammatical errors and suggests improvements for clarity. While this makes your text mechanically sound, it does not give you a proper review of your work. As a result, Grammarly functions more as a grammar fixer than an essay checker, lacking the ability to provide a fair and all-inclusive assessment of academic papers.

Having weighed all the pros and cons, we can see that there’s really only a slight difference between Hemingway Editor and Grammarly. Still, the second one scored 1 point higher on the A*Help scale, mostly because it provides more feedback on the writing and how to improve it for better readability. Generally, though, we can’t call either of them to be a perfect solution for checking your essay.

When it comes to essay grading, both Linguix and Grammarly have their strengths, but neither offers a sufficient solution, as both function more as grammar checkers rather than essay graders.

In the case of Grammarly, you will find that it focuses on the form of the text, identifying spelling and grammatical errors, and suggesting improvements for clarity. However, it lacks content analysis, meaning it does not provide a full evaluation of essays. Our experience with Grammarly showed that it effectively addressed clarity and mechanics but didn’t offer a thorough assessment of the essays’ content and overall quality. 

Similarly, Linguix, while providing an overall readability score and helping correct grammar, punctuation, and the general flow of writing, does not offer in-depth text analysis. Smodin had a promising start offering the detailed grading form for us to fill out. Unfortunately, the results weren’t so great. Smodin did give us a thorough overview of the structure and clarity of both essays as well as noted how both works could be improved. Yet, it marked both texts with the same results – 89% (B), which is weird considering one was clearly worse than the other. Additionally, even though Smodin’s tool gave some analysis of the content and whether it covered the topic fully, it wasn’t sufficient. And when reading both reports it seemed like they repeated one another. What can we say? ClassX: Grading Quality  — 34/60

ClassX presented a really detailed analysis of the two of our texts. When checking the essays, it evaluated the organization, content, vocabulary, grammar & mechanics, and overall impression of both works. Yet, we were surprised to see that the well-written paper scored only one point higher (17/20) compared to the poorly made one (16/20). Besides, both of them were noted to have a good structure with some paragraphing issues, when in reality, the first text was not coherent at all, and the second one had everything logically organized and used a lot of transition words for better readability and flow. It’s important to note though, that ClassX analysis did provide some valuable suggestions on how we could improve the content of our writing. So, overall, considering a thorough analysis but a slightly weird grading system, we would say that even though this service can be a helpful essay checker, its evaluations should be taken with the grain of salt.

ClassX knocked our doors down right away with its both detailed grading form and work analysis. With this service, you can be ready to receive a grade based on the structure and logic of your content, as well as its readability, grammatical correctness, and vocabulary. Plus, it offers a grading form that allows you to specify not just the study level but also the subject you are writing for. All of this is available completely for free. However, with the Premium subscription for just $9/month, you will also have an opportunity to mention the minimum word count required for the work and the assignment title and description. Additionally, teachers will get a chance to both generate with the help of AI and upload their own grading rubric if they need it. Considering all of the above, it is clear to us how ClassX received its 20/20 value-for-money score.

ClassX: Overall Experience — 13/20

The service, despite its very basic and not-at-all aesthetic design, was pretty easy to work with. When we entered the website we could grade our text right away by simply copy-pasting the text into the special form. There was only one ad that we noticed but it wasn’t distracting us from working. However, what ClassX could improve is the way it presents grading results. They are given in a table chart format with each aspect analyzed separately. Note though, that the places that need improvement aren’t underlined in the essay’s text which makes it a bit hard to identify the described issues. In general, putting aside these minor drawbacks, we can say that ClassX is a rather convenient platform.

Conclusion

ClassX doesn’t seem like an attention-worthy platform from the start, but in reality, it provides constructive and helpful feedback regarding the analyzed writing. With its help, it will be much easier to understand where your writing may not be as cohesive or where you move away from the initial topic. We wouldn’t recommend relying solely on its grading, yet, this service can be a good AI-powered partner for both teachers and students alike seeking essay-checking assistance.

Studyable: Grading Quality  — 34/60

Studyable was so simple to work with that it took us around 10 minutes tops. We just pasted our essays and in a few seconds received an AI checker essay evaluation that included the overall score, the feedback about structure, content, topic discussion, and notes on how we could improve engagement and clarity. We would say that the bad essay received a grade a bit higher than it should have. Most prominently, the note from Studyable read that the text had a good overview of the topic. In reality, it was a rather patchy and illogical ramble on the subject. The good essay received almost perfect scores across all the aspects and was marked with 90%. So, it performed mostly as expected. However, what was special about Studyable is that even for a well-written work it provided in-depth comments on how each part of the text could be improved.

Additionally, Studyable is also available in the form of a mobile app for even greater access and convenience.

What can we say, working with Studyable was easy and simple. We especially liked the detailed reports provided by the service. However, our team recognizes that this service lacks some functionality. It won’t help with improving readability, vocabulary, or grammatical mistakes. If you ever came across the recommendation to use Hemingway Editor and wondered “What is Hemingway Editor” at all, then buckle up as our AHelp team is going to tell you everything about it.

This is an AI-powered tool designed to help anyone make their writing better. The platform combines a few solutions in one place: grammar fixer, rewriter, and, most interestingly, essay checker. The last feature was the one that caught our eye: with its help, the Hemingway Editor promised to help us make our writing “concise and correct” as well as provide the grade for the checked piece. We just couldn’t skip the opportunity to see whether the service could be used as a paper evaluator, so we decided to carry out a special mystery shopping project to test it out.

Hemingway Editor Review: Mystery Shopping Experience

To test out Hemingway Editor’s essay grading capabilities, we put it through a special testing process, evaluating the three main criteria: grading quality, value for money, and overall experience.

The main thing we wanted to find out was how well can the service assess writing. To check that out we run two essays on the same topic through the tool. The first one was badly written: it had problems with structure and transition words, as well as grammatical, punctuation, and spelling mistakes. The second one, on the other hand, was a well-written text that had proper paragraph organization, logical transitions, organized citations, and no grammatical errors. After grading them using Hemingway, we compared the analysis with the actual indicators of both papers which made up the Grading Quality score.

Additionally, to check out the value-for-money aspect, we looked at the pricing policies, free-use opportunities, grading form flexibility, and the criteria offered to be evaluated. When assessing the overall experience, our team mostly paid attention to the convenience of the service and its ease of use.

Having put together all three scores, we graded (ironically) Hemingway Editor with an A*Help score, representing its usefulness and quality as an essay-checking service. Let’s look closely at what we found out about this platform.

Hemingway Editor: Grading Quality  — 20/60

So, let’s spill the tea on whether Hemingway Editor is really a good platform to use for checking your essays. And, to be frank, Hemingway Editor wasn’t perfect when it came to essay grading at all.

It did help with improving the texts’ writing to make them more clear. For example, there were suggestions as to how we could improve hard-to-read sentences and weak vocabulary. It also gave us the option to choose the specification for our text as a technical one, so that readability would be assessed accordingly. Nonetheless, when assessing the well-written essay, a lot of sentences still got marked as ‘hard to read’, despite having a typical structure and wording for an academic piece.

The scoring system confused us a lot too, as the bad essay was graded with 7 points and marked as “good”, while the well-written paper received a score of 16 and an “ok” comment. It didn’t look like the adjustments we made when specifying the purpose of the writing had any influence on the result. There was also no general score or feedback as to the content of the writing. 

So, according to our Hemingway Editor review, this service has more functionality to be an online proofreader rather than an essay checker. So we can’t suggest you use it to see which grade your paper can get.

Since Hemingway is a largely recommended platform to help with writing improvement, we decided to look closely at what it offers to evaluate. 

Let us tell you, the service surely looks like the right platform to do the essay checking. However, it is important to note from the start that here you won’t receive a grade for your work. This service was designed rather to analyze and improve readability, as well as fix grammar, punctuation, and spelling along the way. However, it won’t help make your arguments stronger or keep your content on track with the discussed topic. We can give a few bonus points to Hemingway as it also identifies weak language and gives an opportunity to make the text better with AI.

If you still want to check out the service for yourself, a great plus is that you can do it for free during a 14-day trial. After that though, you will have to pick one of the monthly plans, that start at $10/month.

In general, though, we wouldn’t say that this platform offers any extra valuable assistance, not at essay grading at least.

Hemingway Editor: Overall Experience — 18/20

Another important aspect to consider when choosing a platform for grading essays, is usability and convenience. 

In this field, we can confirm that working with Hemingway Editor is pretty straightforward. You can either register to get a free trial or use it as is without registration and a few limitations. We decided to go for a free trial to get the full experience. Unfortunately, we saw no grading form, as expected, but just a field where we could paste a text to get it analyzed. Yet, on the bright side, the opportunity to both upload and export the text made the work process much easier. An extra great addition was the desktop app that allowed for a more streamlined writing assessment too.

Overall, Hemingway presented us with a pleasant user experience, with nothing, except for a special grading form, that we would want to add to the platform.  

Conclusion

At the end of the day, in case you are looking for a service to evaluate your writing, Hemingway Editor is not for you. It can be a good companion to those who want to improve the flow of their texts and correct any possible issues with wording or grammar.  Otherwise, it won’t give you any suggestions as to how the content of your paper could be improved. So, think about what you are looking for to assess in your essays. If you need to get at least an approximate grade for your work, check out some other services aside from Hemingway.

Linguix was first launched back in 2018 as a simple browser extension with the sole purpose of helping people write better. Now, it’s a popular platform that offers AI-powered writing solutions both for personal and even business purposes. 

What drew our attention to Linguix though, was the fact that it provided what they called a “Content Score” feature, designed to grade all kinds of different texts. Our AHelp team decided, that since this service can evaluate the quality of written content, it would be a great idea to test it out on paper checking as well. After all, analysis, structure, and cohesiveness in writing are needed both to create articles and blog posts and to write academic essays. 

Linguix Review: Mystery Shopping Experience

The AHelp team tests all the reviewed platforms and Linguix isn’t an exception. To see how well this service could handle essay checking, we carried out a special mystery shopping project.

Our primary concern was the grading quality. To see how well Linguix could assess writing we used it to check two essays on the same topic: one badly written, with mistakes in structure, cohesiveness, grammar, and punctuation; and the other well-written, with quality writing, topic focus, and paragraph organization. After running them both through the essay-checking tool, we compared the provided results with the actual writing quality to see whether they were at all proper and relevant. 

Our team also paid attention to value-for-money aspects of the service such as pricing, analyzed criteria, and flexibility of the grading form. Another area of the tool’s assessment was its convenience: how easy it was to work with the service, whether there was an app or a browser extension available, and if there was a chance to get some kind of support if necessary.

All of the three aspects were closely calculated and summed up to create the A*help score of the platform. Below, we present a detailed Linguix review which breaks down and explains the assessment results.

Linguix: Grading Quality – 14/60

Why do you search for an essay grader? The most obvious reason is that you probably want to know how you can improve your essay so that you can receive the desired grade. That’s why it’s important to pick a service that can check your papers across all the most relevant criteria, including topic focus, writing quality and correctness, structure, vocabulary, and cohesiveness.

Taking this into account, we can’t really call Linguix an essay-checking platform. From our experience, aside from the overall readability score, it doesn’t provide any text analysis at all. Yes, it can help correct grammar, punctuation, and the general flow of the writing. It highlights places that have errors and even provide suggestions as to how they can be changed. Moreover, there’s even an option to benefit from an AI-powered rewriter to rephrase or change the tone of sentences that were deemed wordy or unclear. Still, there’s no option to see a possible grade for your essay or the assessment of its structure and topic discussion. 

We can confirm that, in terms of text quality, our bad and good essays received relevant results: 53% and 96% respectively. However, if readability isn’t your main concern we would say that you can go fine without using this tool specifically.

Linguix: Value for Money – 12/20

When choosing a platform to grade your papers with, consider which aspects it offers to evaluate. Why would you need to work with a service that can’t cover the assessment criteria for your paper?

Unfortunately, Linguix will most probably be exactly that kind of platform. From the start, it does look appealing, offering a variety of features and promising to check texts for different kinds of mistakes and provide the overall quality score. Yet, having checked out the actual technology behind it, we noticed that aside from spelling, grammar, punctuation, and text quality it doesn’t help with writing assessment. 

Of course, Linguix still gave us some help with our essays. What we found specifically helpful were the suggestions for writing improvement provided by the service. It underlined specific places in the text that needed to be more clear. It also offered sentence rewriting options, that included changing the tone of voice and their length.

As to the pricing, the service could be used for free only with a 7-day free trial available with each subscription. The monthly plan for personal use can be purchased for $15/month which is affordable but isn’t reasonable considering the platform’s functionality.

So, to draw the line, we would say that Linguix doesn’t offer much to work with when it comes to essay checking.

Linguix: Overall Experience – 15/20

As we previously noted, we pay specific attention to the convenience of the service we work with. 

As to the Linguix, we would call it highly intuitive and easy to use. The interface was pleasant both to look at and to work with. When checking the pasted text, we could see the word count and number of characters in our text as well as the reading time for the writing. Another plus was that the platform allowed us to modify all the mistakes right there. We were able to correct grammar, and punctuation, and even rewrite sentences to improve them or change them completely. You should note though, that here there’s no option to upload documents or download the improved text. So be ready to copy and paste the final result into a separate document.

What stood out for us was that Linguix provided a browser extension (matching with various browsers by the way), allowing to evaluate and make changes directly in your work documents. Thus, generally speaking, we weren’t disappointed by the service’s usability.

Conclusion

After all the evaluations, we’ve come to a final decision that Linguix isn’t a good fit for essay grading purposes. Yes, it can be used for grammar checking and sentence improvement and help you make the readability of your texts much higher. Nonetheless, it doesn’t have much to offer aside from that. Taking into account that it has a limited free trial, we would recommend looking at some other essay-checking tools before picking this one.

Additionally, we also took notice of the overall user experience from using the service: whether it was convenient to register and fill out the grading form, whether there were any tool-integration possibilities, and whether we could upload and download files on the website.

PaperRater: Grading Quality –  17/60

PaperRater was quick with the evaluation of both our papers. It didn’t show such a great report that we would have hoped for. First of all, the tool doesn’t take into account the structure of writing when checking, as it can only note the use of transition words. It also won’t help you make your arguments or the general content of your work any stronger.

However, it does give a breakdown of the quality of style, spelling, grammar, vocabulary, plagiarism, and the use of vocabulary words. Each of these aspects was graded separately and included an extra note on what might need to be improved and how it can be done. We would like to also make a side note here to highlight the fact that even though the service specializes in improving grammar, it can skip some errors. In our case, when checking the poorly-written essay, only 3/4 spelling and 2 grammar mistakes were corrected, but no punctuation was improved. In the second essay, on the other hand, Paper Rater did find a few mistakes that weren’t there but overall showed that the text had a good grammar score.

At the end of this analysis, the bad essay was labeled with a score of 70/100 (C), and the good paper received a 96 (A) grade. Prompts to PaperGrader, as this tool shows a warning that the provided grades are not complete, as they only analyze the aspects that are shown in the report. Considering all the facts though, we can’t say that this service has a sufficient grading quality.

PaperRater: Value for Money — 17/20

We think that checking the features provided by the service is important. After all, this can give you a clear sense of whether the chosen platform will cover your needs and give you the grade you are looking for. So, we snooped around PaperRater to see what it offers, and here’s what we found.

When working on the website, we noted that the service puts a great emphasis on checking papers’ grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and writing clarity, and can even provide plagiarism checks. Moreover, a paid plan would also give us the option to see the readability score of the writing. As to the actual content of the writing, however, the platform doesn’t assess anything but readability. Its grading form also didn’t give us much opportunity to specify the topic of our paper or the subject we were writing for. We could only choose the study level for our assignment and the type of work it was. 

What we can say about PaperRater though is that, considering it doesn’t really have much to offer, it is reasonably priced. The monthly subscription comes just at $14.99/month. For those who are planning on a long-term commitment to the service, there’s an even more attractive yearly option for $95.40. However, we would recommend benefiting from the service’s free plan. It comes with some minor limitations, such as a one-time submission cap being 5 pages and an overall monthly limit of 50 submissions. Yet, as we tried working on the platform for free, we would say that this could be more than enough.
In general, we would say that PaperRater has a couple of valuable features, but it doesn’t offer that much to its users.

Paper Rater: Overall Experience — 13/20

If you choose to work with an online service, it is important to make sure that it is convenient to use. To be honest, the website was pretty simplistic, with the interface looking like it came back from 2010. Yet, it was usable. A great plus was that we didn’t have to register with PaperRater to use its tools – we just started working with it right away. 

The grading form was straightforward: we could upload a document or paste a text and then specify the type of writing and study level. The results were presented clearly, in a special box with a detailed description of each of the graded criteria. Aside from that, it also included information on the total number of sentences, average sentence length, and sentence variation. However, it should be clarified that although PaperRater provides an option to get a printable report, it doesn’t give any means to actually download it. Additionally, there’re no options to sign in with a Google or Apple account, and while the tool is simple and easy to use, the website feels a bit clumped. 

Overall, we can say that our experience working with the service was okay, but there’s a lot of room for improvement.

Conclusion

Our verdict is as follows: PaperRater is not the best service to use if you want to get a grade for your paper. This service can certainly help to understand where your writing needs to be more cohesive and whether you need to improve your vocabulary. It can also be helpful if you need to quickly make sure you haven’t missed any grammatical mistakes. Unfortunately, though, you can’t expect to get a relevant score from this platform, as it doesn’t analyze the content and structure of your writing. And the A*Help score of just 47/100 pts supports this statement.
